Why is my dog limping and whining in pain? What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 60 lbs

Previous owners told me that he sprained his hind right leg. Called vet, they said it was a muscle spain and they gave him Carprofen on 12/28/16. They didn't give it to him as directed. Now he limps and won't put weight on his front right leg (tried finding where it hurts but it seems like it doesn't hurt him) and sometimes after a walk he whines about his hind left leg (outer thigh right in the middle). What could be wrong?

He could have a sprain, ligament issue, infection (Lyme), inflammation, etc. If the limp continues than have him examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do an orthopedic exam and then take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose. He may need to continue the Carprofen to help with any pain and inflammation.
