My dog's ear canal is closed, but he can still hear. Is that possible?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 2 months old

A few months ago max went to the vet. She had told my mom that the infection in his ears had closed his ear canal. To me this made no sense because he would be deaf, wouldn't he? He still comes when you call him, reacts when you say special things. Now I got some new ear cleaner and it drys wax, gets rid of the smell and seems to be working great. What I would like to know is if his ears are actually closed up. He has always had an infection even with the meds, they never worked very well.

It could be that your vet meant that Max's ear canals were severely swollen from the ear infections (which can and does happen), but not enough to prevent him from hearing. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain, but that would be my best guess :-)
