What's wrong if my cat won't eat, loses weight, and has cold symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

my cat hasn't eaten in 3 days, he has shown signs of having a cold (runny nose, breathing through his mouth, eyes watering), he is still drinking water and putting out urine, but he's losing weight progressively from not eating and he's been laying in his litter box, what does it sound like is wrong with him?

Poor Bum Bum! It sounds like he's quite sick. Unfortunately, not eating, weight loss, and laying in his litter box are all very vague symptoms that could be caused by almost any kind of illness. It's possible that his respiratory infection is causing him to feel sick and not eat, or he may have a more serious problem such as liver or kidney disease. Regardless of the underlying cause, when a cat doesn't eat for more than 24 hours this always requires a vet visit - not eating for multiple days can cause serious liver issues and even death in cats, even if the original problem was relatively minor. Your vet can do some lab tests to help determine what's wrong and get Bum Bum started on appropriate treatment right away.
