Dog ate coconut oil, vomiting. Should I go to emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Male | neutered | 6 months and 16 days old | 30 lbs

My 6mo. old basset hound got into a bottle of fractionated coconut oil and ingested it. He is now vomitting every twenty minutes or so, give or take, and shaking. He is asleep now, but I'm debating on whether I need to take him to an emergency vet or if this is something that will pass.

You have all my simpathy as I have a naughty Basset Hound too. Coconut oil is very rich in fat, so I would suggest that you have him checked over as he could be developing pancreatitis . Best sooner rather than later.

The problem with eating a lot of coconut oil is that it can cause pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a life threatening inflammation of the pancreas that requires intensive treatment. Given what she has eaten, her symptoms, and the fact that eating a lot of fatty and oily food leads to pancreatitis, I think it's best she is taken into an ER vet now.
