My cat recovering from pneumonia coughed bloody mucus. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old | 11.5 lbs

My 12 year old cat is recovering from pneumonia. He has had 2 weeks of 1 cc Doxy 1x daily and .4 cc Metronidazole 2x daily. He had a followup visit on Saturday and his 2nd round of x-rays were clearer but not completely clear. The cough he had was almost completely clear. He was put on another 2 weeks of medication. This evening after giving his medication he coughed up bloody mucus and his cough, while not as bad as it was, is more prevalent. Is this normal?

It could be that the medication is working to help clear up the congestion from the pneumonia that has made poor Don so sick, and that's why you are seeing him cough up some bloody mucus. I would keep an eye on him for now, and if the cough gets worse again, or he continues to cough up bloody mucus, I would bring him back into the vet for a health check.
