My dog has bloody diarrhea and dark clots. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I am dog sitting a standard poodle for a friend who is out of country. During a normal day, the dog goes every where with its owner. Owner has been gone 5 days. First couple days the dog had no stools, then had what appeared to be a very hard/strained stool. Now the dog has loose bloody (red) stools and I have noticed small dark blood clots in stool. I believe the dog suffers from separation anxiety but I would like your recommendation on what to do about the bloody stools. Thank you. PRT

I'm sorry this dog is having these issues while you are dog sitting! Bloody diarrhea in dogs can be caused by hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, trauma to the GI tract, GI tumors, a foreign body, intestinal parasites, or eating something toxic among other causes. When a dog has bloody diarrhea, they have to see a vet immediately due to the serious causes behind it. I would take the dog into a vet now, who can diagnose what is causing his bloody diarrhea and treat him for it.
