After cat flu, how long to disinfect home & items for a new cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | 4 months and 27 days old | 15 lbs

I purchased a pedigree ragdoll unfortunately we've found out she has cat flu and it has caused difficulty as she is not responding well to medication so we are giving her back to the breeder. She had calicivirus ,chlamydophila felis and microplasma felis. The breeder will be collecting her on Friday. My question is , is how long will it take for all the bacteria to leave my home and I can get a new cat? Also will i need to throw out my litter box, cat bed, cat scratch posts etc and buy new ones?

I'm very sorry Mitzi isn't working out! Calicivirus typically lasts a week to 14 days in the environment, chlamydophila felis doesn't survive well in the environment and is easily killed, and microplasma felis does not survive long in the environment as well. You can get a new cat, but I would wait a couple of weeks to be sure. Be sure to thoroughly disinfect and clean all the cat items you have to prevent any chance of transmission of cat flu to your new cat.
