My senior dog's new food has glucosamine. Do I still need supplements?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 13 years and 5 months old | 68 lbs

I currently give my 13 year old German Shepherd Terramax Pro liquid Glucosamine with Chondroitin MSM with his food which is Hills Science Diet Active Longevity. I am going to switch his food to Wellness Complete Health Senior dog food. That food contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate in it. When I switch the food should I quit adding the Terramax Pro or continue using it? I don't want to give my dog too much.

If the food already contains glucosamine and chondrotin than you shouldn't have to supplement with more unless the food contains an inadequate amount. You could look on the bag of food to see the amount that is in the food and compare it to the amount you have been giving. Make sure to switch foods gradually so you don't cause gastrointestinal problems.
