My dog has a raspy cough and isn't around other dogs. Is it a cold?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 28 lbs

My dog has not been around other dogs so not kennel cough. This morning she ate and then almost looked like she was going to vomit after. I thought she had something stuck so put my finger down her throat ..nothing lodged. Now has a raspy cough on and off. Can this be a cold? Gave her a little warm honey to soothe her throat. Any advice you can help me with. Thanks

It does sound like Lucy may have a cold. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow, as she may need medications to help with her symptoms. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

Coughing could be caused by several different things. The source of the cough is the most important thing to determine - meaning is it primarily a respiratory problem or a cardiac problem. Based on Lucy's age I would assume that her cough is more respiratory in nature. I would recommend taking her to the vet to be checked out. She may need some medication like antibiotics and a cough suppressant to help her get well. Depending on the severity of her cough your vet may also recommend chest X-rays as well. Best of luck!
