My dog has not been around other dogs so not kennel cough. This morning she ate and then almost looked like she was going to vomit after. I thought she had something stuck so put my finger down her throat ..nothing lodged. Now has a raspy cough on and off. Can this be a cold? Gave her a little warm honey to soothe her throat. Coughing could be caused by several different things. The source of the cough is the most important thing to determine - meaning is it primarily a respiratory problem or a cardiac problem. Based on Lucy's age I would assume that her cough is more respiratory in nature. I would recommend taking her to the vet to be checked out. She may need some medication like antibiotics and a cough suppressant to help her get well. Depending on the severity of her cough your vet may also recommend chest X-rays as well. Best of luck!

It could be Coco had a respiratory infection that she has passed onto Lucy. As long as both dogs are eating, drinking water, are not lethargic, and aren't having problems breathing, you can wait until the morning to have them seen by a vet. I hope this helps.

Tonight, if she's congested, you can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

It sounds like PD may have a respiratory infection. I would take her into the vet for an exam tomorrow. She may benefit from some antibiotics to help with the infection. In the meantime, she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

Poor pup! There are lots of things that can cause coughing in dogs, so it's hard to say that the problem might be without being able to examine him. You're right that respiratory infections are quite common in dogs, and are the most common cause of coughing that I see in young dogs who are otherwise healthy - so this could very well be what is causing your dog to cough. Other possible causes of coughing would include allergies, bronchitis, or more serious issues like heart disease or lung tumors. If the coughing just started and your dog is acting normal otherwise, you could opt to wait until tomorrow morning to take him to the vet - your vet can listen to his heart and lungs to check for any problems, and will probably prescribe an antibiotic if an infection is suspected. If your dog is acting weak or lethargic or having any trouble breathing, it would be best to have him seen today by an emergency vet, as these can be signs of a more serious problem.

Poor Lucy. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Vets will see pets for illnesses during this time. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Zoey may have an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough. This is a very contagious disease and she may have picked it up while walking outside, or when sniffing another dog. This is usually a self-limiting disease and will go away by itself within 4 weeks. If she gets a purulent discharge (nose and/or eyes), has trouble breathing or coughs more than a couple of times a day, you need to take her to the vet for an exam, antibiotics and cough medicine.

I'm wondering if she actually has a productive cough - a cough can sound very similar to attempted vomiting in a dog and they will often retch at the end and produce a small amount of white foam. This would go along with the runny nose that you're seeing. You should see your vet - this could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection, an infection like kennel cough, or even pneumonia. Even if she has not been around other dogs and she is the only one showing symptoms at this point an infection is still possible.
