My cat is territorial with other cats. When should I intervene?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

3 tomcats have adopted the hotel where I work as home. They all have food/shelter in different areas. One has adopted me and stays close to to wherever I am. If one of the others (mainly the bigger one) come sniffing around for leftovers - not aggressively - 'my' cat gets mildly ruffled, mainly posturing and vocal. My question is: At what point can I step in (not physically) to separate them without stepping on his right to defend his space? At least until I can TNR any of them. Thank you!

Most chances you will never really need to, cats usually spend ages making those ridiculous noises and then after abut 10 minutes of doing nothing they will fight at a lightning speed for 1-2 seconds and then one of them will run away from the scene.
