My dog limping, swollen paw after jumping. What to do tonight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 9 months old

My 7 yr old chihuahua rat terrier started limping at noon. I realized the limping right after he jumped from the couch to the ground. He's left paw is now swollen but only one of his middle(fingers). It is very red inside the paw. Ive been trying all day to look and see if there is something inside that's causing this but I can't find anything and he is making it really hard for me to look as he starts shaking and yelping. I can tell it hurts even with gentle touch.something I can do for tonight

Poor Chico! You can try soaking his paw in an Epsom salt bath. That can help with swelling. If his toe is still very swollen in the morning and/or he's still in a lot of pain in the morning, then he needs to see a vet right away. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
