My dog is acting strange, shaking, and burping. Should I call a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 9.36 lbs

My dog (a yorkshire terrier) suddenly became strange 3 hours ago, he is trying to hide, he walks with his face down, don't come when I call him, he is just laying on the floor in unusual places. He don't seem to have problems eating or drinking. He is shaking, He is not too hot so I think he doesn't have fever. I'm not sure about this but he seems to be burping a lot (stomach not bloated though) . Will he be ok tonight? Should I call an emergency vet?

I can certainly understand being concerned about Niko! If he did have bloat, you would see unproductive vomiting, abdominal pain, an enlarged belly, restless, and pacing. It could be that he is feeling unwell from stomach upset causing the burping and strange behavior. The shaking could be caused by pain. I would monitor Niko for now. If he does start to show signs of bloat, or starts vomiting and becomes very lethargic, I would have him seen by an emergency vet. Otherwise, have him seen by a vet in the morning should these same symptoms continue.

Hi, this is Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The signs of gastric torsion (GDV) is non productive retching (trying to vomit but not bringing up anything), pacing, panting, uncomfortable, nauseous, a hard painful abdomen, high heart rate. They do not want to eat or sleep. They are very uncomfortable. Niko is eating and a GDV is unlikely to occur in a toy breed. I think you are very worried about his belly and think you should have a Vet examine him tomorrow. Best wishes!
