My cats foamed and had pink skin after flea treatment. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 5 lbs

We gave out two cats a liquid spot flea treatment on their backs between the shoulder blades. Within a couple of minutes, despite neither of them ingesting any of it, they were both foaming at the mouth. We immediately washed off the treatment which left their skin pinkish where it was applied. they seem to be fine now and we are closely monitoring them. Is there any more action we should take?

You did exactly the right thing by washing off Odin and Toby right away. Continue to monitor them, and if you see any additional signs of toxicity such as muscle tremors, vomiting, diarrhea, depression and incoordination, I would take them into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, I would have them both examined by a vet in the morning to be safe.
