My new rescue dog bit a friend. Is it fear aggression? What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Toby just bit my friend in the face and she now has a small Scratch on her nose. He is very afraid of other people besides me as he is a rescue dog and has only been with me for about a month. I do not know to teach him biting is wrong and feel terrible for my friend. She was leaning to him to give him a kiss, but she had done it before with no bad reaction. Should I be worried? Is this just a stress reaction? What should I do?

Oh no, I'm so sorry this happened! When dogs who are fearful, this can be a common reaction, as having a human lean over them can be scary and they react by biting. In the future, when giving Toby affection, get down onto his level first. I would recommend having him seen by a professional behavioral expert. This type of fear aggression may be improved with training, and because aggression is a dangerous behavior to work with, it's best left to the professionals. Your vet can give you a recommendation to one. I hope your friend's nose is ok!

This is common with dogs who are afraid in general, it's not usually a real aggressive reaction, it is a scared reaction. she was lucky to end up with a scratch only but next time it could obviously be worse. in some cases professional training can help building their confidence and this could solve future incidents like this one.
