Why does my dog's poop and slobber smell like bleach? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 54 lbs

My dogs slobber and poop has a slight smell of bleach off it just wondering what the cause might be as it's quite sickening when you get close to it.

If George has not got diarrhoea and the feces have normal consistency and colour and content, the problem might be dietary related. I would suggest to try to give him a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice for a week time and see if there is any change. There are eventually diseases related to ammonia/bleach smell (one of these is renal failure), and a blood test could help ruling them out, but they are unlikely.
