How to keep my very sick dog comfortable and peaceful at end of life?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 3 months old

I'm 90% sure my dog has brain tumor. it started as breast cancer few years back, within the last year it moved to another nipple and both grew larger with time. Suddenly she stopped eating and showed signs of vestibular disease, antibiotics didn't work and she lost movement in one eye and developed spasticity (extension of arms and neck). Now she's fully dependent. We're not putting her down cause she's not resisting feeding, how can i make the rest of her life comfortable and peaceful?

I'm so sorry Zara is so sick! The best thing you can is continue to offer her food and water, keep her warm, and make her a comfortable as possible with a soft bed. I would evaluate her quality of life every day, and make a list of five things Zara loves to do. If she isn't doing at least two of them, then her quality of life has declined to a point where euthanasia should be considered. I would also speak to your vet about pain medications, because mammary cancer can be very painful to dogs. That would also help her be more comfortable.
