Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 months and 26 days old | 8.5 lbs
I am an emotional wreck! I have been gradually weaning my dog off of a leash. We have other dogs that go outside and never leave the yard so I am trying to teach her. She has been doing good about coming to me and not running off and it has been about four days. However, today she was playing in the yard and all of a sudden darts towards the road. My heart sank. She stopped a couple feet from the road only because I pretended I had food to give her. How can I keep her from running to the road?

If Ginger isn't reliable off leash she shouldn't be allowed to be off leash for her own safety. If you don't have a fenced yard but still want to let her run around, a long leash of about 20-30 feet can allow her to run around while still giving you control to stop her. You can also use this length of leash to solidify recall commands and teach boundaries. An electric underground fence may also be beneficial to help teach boundaries without an above-ground fence present.
