My cat's weepy eye persists despite vet treatment. What next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat is a rescue so he's a mixed breed and I know little about his background. When I got him at 3 months, he had a weepy eye which I have been constantly addressing for 6 months, and it still weeps on a regular basis despite the cream the vet prescribed to him. Do you have any alternative suggestions for treatment?

It could be that your cat is suffering from chlamydia, which manifests in cats as weepy eyes. Don't work, it cannot be transmitted to you! Doxycycline treats weepy eyes in cats with chlamydia, and I would speak to your vet to see if that helps with his eye discharge. It's not sexually transmitted as in humans, mother cats can give it to their kittens, and it's transmitted via the air in close cat quarters or via bedding and the feeding area. You can also try giving him an on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight.
