My cat's paw is infected, he can't walk or eat. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12.5 lbs

My cat has a picture wound on his paw pad and it looks infected. He can't walk on it and has hardly eaten or drank anything all day. We aren't sure when it happened as he isn't much of a complainer but its scabbed so it has to have been a few days ago. His balance is completely gone, probably due to him having to use his good back paw to support his back end. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Joe.

Ouch, poor Felix! If he can't walk on it, it looks infected, and he's hardly eaten or drank today, you should take him into a vet right away. It's likely very painful to him, causing him to not be able to put pressure on it. Severe pain would keep him from eating and drinking as well. The wound needs to be cleaned, he will need antibiotics for the infection, and pain medication. The vet can do all of this for him. Please do not give Felix any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.
