My dog is lethargic with a swollen teat after puppies. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 45 lbs

My dog had puppies all of them have been weaned except for 1. She has been an amazing mom. Today she is not herself. She's breathing heavily and doesn't want to do anything but sleep or drink water. One of her teats is swollen but normal milk color can still come out. I've put a lightly heated pad on her and she's just lethargic. Is this something I need to worry about or is she just healing and drying up.

I would be concerned in that this swollen teat could be due to mastitis, and that would also cause her to breath heavily, be lethargic, and not want to eat. Now given that mastitis can be fatal without treatment, I would have Ariel seen by a vet right away. The vet can diagnose if she does have mastitis, and can treat her for it.
