My dog is breathing hard, making a noise. Can I help at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 16 years and 3 months old | 75 lbs

It sounds like my dog is having trouble getting air or that he is having an asthma attack and it's getting worse and worse every day and today it's really bad and he's making a terrible noise as he's trying to breathe, is there anything I can do to help my dog here at home without taking him to a vet?

Poor Titus! There really isn't anything you can do at home without having a vet examine him to determine the cause of his problem. It could be caused by an infection, asthma, collapsing trachea, congestive heart failure, etc. Your vet can do an examination and take an x-ray of his chest to diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. Your vet can prescribe medications depending on the cause. Hope he feels better soon!
