Thanks for your question. Increased production of abnormal stools might be due to different causes: parasitic infestation and dietary indiscretion are the most common but other diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal bacteria overgrowth cannot be excluded at this stage. Make sure you are providing a good quality and balanced diet and if the problem is not quickly resolving I would recommend to seek your veterinarian advice and to perform a fecal analysis.

It sounds like your dog has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. Since the abnormal stool has been happening repeatedly I would recommend taking a stool sample in to your vet’s office to be examined for intestinal parasites. If he does not have worms then your vet will need to do a work up to determine what is causing the abnormal stools. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
