My dog's tail hurts and anal glands are swollen. Is her tail broken?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 35 lbs

Something is wrong with my dogs tail. Initially I thought it was broken but when I tried touching it moving up and down the tail gently squeezing to asses a break or nothing dog did not respond. I tried lifting the tail and the dog responded in pain, but when I go to look I think her anal glands are swollen. I gently stated touching her anal glands and she started to lift her tail slowly ..not sure what's going on. If her tail is broken or not

It sounds like Misty's anal sacs may be impacted if they are swollen, and they will need to be expressed to prevent them from rupturing. If you've never expressed her anal sacs before, I would have her seen by the vet to have it done. When a dog's anal sacs are impacted, that is painful for the dog, and it could cause Misty to hold her tail differently. I don't think her tail is broken, but I can't say that for certain without seeing her in person. I would have Misty seen by a vet tomorrow, who can diagnose if her tail is broken, and can express her anal sacs if needed.
