Giving dog pills with food before surgery: Is it okay to break fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 100 lbs

My dog will be having surgery tmw to be neutered and he is required to take tranquilizer pills because he doesn't do well with strangers and the only way he'll take them is if I put them in some sort of food. I know you're not supposed to give them food or water after midnight but I'm not sure what to do. Thank you for your help.

You can give the pills in a small amount of peanut butter, canned dog food, or wrapped in a piece of cheese or lunch meat if needed - this should not hurt anything for his surgery :) The main concern is that we don't want a dog to have a full stomach going into surgery, since if he vomits while he's waking up there is a chance of aspirating the vomit into the lungs. But a small bite of food to give a pill should be just fine.
