My dog is on pain meds. When should I worry about his whining?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Brought dog in to vet 3 days ago. On methacarbamol, tramadol aND gabapentin. At first he would yelp when he stands up. Now it's more of a soft whine...maybe once or twice a day. He still is a bit reluctant to lower his head to eat. When should I be concerneed if he is still whining?

As long as he is improving and signs are diminishing, continue to treat as directed by your veterinarian. If he stops improving, worsens or seems more painful then have him rechecked by your veterinarian. Elevate the water and food bowls. Restrict activity as much as possible and leash walk using a harness to alleviate cervical stress.
