My dog is coughing and whining after surgery, what could be the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi I am the owner of the min pin that asked you guys a question last week in reference to having an operation done on his eye due to an ulcer that had not healed. He had his operation last week. My reason for contacting you again is because my dog developed like a cough the night before the operation and none of us slept all night. After the op the cough disappeared but has come back this evening. He had a chest xray before the op and vet says it was clear. He is whining constantly

I'm glad you decided to have the operation done, and I hope that it went well! It could be that he now has a respiratory infection causing the cough. Tonight you can try using a humidifier (steam only) or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. If he is still having problems with coughing in the morning, I would have him seen by the vet again, as he may need medications to help with his cough which the vet can prescribe.
