What causes my dog's bloodshot, cloudy, watering, and itchy eyes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 9 months old | 18 lbs

Baxter, my yorkie/Rat terrier mix, has had bloodshot eyes for the past two days. He has been squinting, blinking, and trying to scratch at them, and I've noticed that his eyes are a bit cloudy and are watering. I'm definitely willing to take him to the vet! I just need some guidance on what might be causing it.

It's most likely an eye infection, possibly conjunctivitis. Taking him to the vet now is great, before he damages the eye teslf by rubbing and scratching. Your vet will do an ophthalmic exam, part of which may be putting a dye in his eyes and examining them under a black light to look for scratches on his cornea. Based of the results of the exam, it will allow your vet to know just what is going on and how best to treat it.
