My kitten died from FIP. Are his brothers at risk? Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 23 days old | 2.6 lbs

Kitten was sick and we suspected FIP (thanks to the valuable hints given by Dr. Elbeze in an online consultation). Unfortunately he died today, was dissected, and the cause of death was confirmed as FIP. I have a follow-up question: are the kitten's brothers at risk too? Or i can safely purchase one of them? If so, should i disinfect the house in some way, or is it not contagious? Thanks

I am very sorry to hear that. the other kittens are not at direct risk because FIP is a mutation of a virus called Corona, but the mutation itself is not contagious (they cannot be infected by the mutation). nevertheless if they caught the corona virus there is always a chance that they could develop this mutation, but it is very unlikely.
