My dog's first heat has black, foul-smelling discharge. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 29 days old

My dog just had her period for the first time two days ago. She started discharging dark (almost black) blood today, unlike the first two days it was a normal red. It also smells REALLY bad. She's eating normally though, and doesn't seem to be ill. What could cause this? She did have a rough start at birth, she was smaller/weaker than her sisters and almost died, but I don't know if it had something to do with it. :(

It's not normal for a dog to have a black bloody discharge with a bad smell during her heat, and I would have Pip seen by a vet right away. I would be very concerned that this dark blood and bad smell could be indicative of an infection of the uterus. Have her seen by a vet ASAP for a health check.
