New cat sick, vet suspects FIP. Can it spread to my other cat quickly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 6 lbs

We adopted a cat from a cat rescue place about 5 days ago. She has been sleeping almost all the time so I took her to the vet today. She is running a fever of 104 and is sneezing, but has no nasal discharge. The vet is concerned that she might have FIP. Tonight, I noticed that our other cat is also acting lethargic, so took his temp and it is 104 also. Could a cat contract FIP in only 5 days from another cat? Unfortunately we didn't quarantine the new one when we got her.

No, this is impossible, FIP is a mutation and it's not contagious in it's active form, as your other cat is suffering from the same symptoms i would say that it is probably some other type of infection and not FIP.

Hi and thanks for your post. FIP is actually not a very contagious disease. Once the infection starts, only a small amount of virus is shed by the cat. Direct contact with the infected cat is the most common way of transmission as well as an infected mother to kitten transmission or direct contact with stool. The virus only can live three weeks outside of a host. Therefore it is unlikely your new cat will be exposed to the virus. No need to worry. I hope this helps and I wish you and your new cat the best!
