My dog ate candy and is peeing the bed. Is this a UTI or emergency?

Hi! My female dog, Opal ate a few full size butterfinger candy bars Saturday while we were gone and she was sick for the first night but since then she's been normal for the most part, except she has been peeing the bed whenever she's in a deep sleep. Do you think this is from the sugar? Do you think she is ok and I can make an appointment for her or do you think this could be an emergency? Thank you in advance!

You don't indicate whether Opal is spayed or not, but I would add that urination while sleeping is often a sign of a condition called hormonal incontinence (also "spay incontinence") which is caused by the lack of estrogen that happens once we spay dogs. I would definitely get her checked out as she may have a UTI as Dr. Melanie indicated, or an incontinence issue.

Poor Opal! I would be concerned that peeing while she is sleeping is due to a UTI rather than a problem with all the sugar she ate. I don't think this is an emergency, but I do think she should see a vet tomorrow. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, and a urinalysis to diagnose if she does have a UTI, and if she does, the vet can prescribe antibiotics to treat it.
