My dog's eye infection won't clear up after months of vet cream.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

My toy poodle has been suffering from an eye infection for about 3 months now. We took her to the vet and they made sure there wasn't anything wrong with the actual eye, and there wasn't. They just stated she had an eye infection and gave us cream. We have now went through 2 bottles with no results. We have also tried home remedies such as coconut oil, colloidal silver, and oil of oregano with no results. We have lost hope and are seeking any new advice to help our poor pup! Please help!

I'd recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss what other tests might be recommended. It may be that Bella has a resistant infection, allergy or autoimmune disease. If your vet isn't sure about the next step you could also ask about referral to an ophthalmologist who would be able to do a thorough evaluation. I would recommend stopping any home remedies as many essential oils can harm the sensitive eye.

I strongly recommend you get Bella reassessed, possibly by an ophthalmologist as a simple infection should have cleared by now. Abnormal eyelashes, blocked tear ducts or a shortage of tears may be complicating matters.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry that Bella isn't feeling well - she's such a cutie! It looks like she has some hair loss and redness on the lower eyelid. This can be due to an infection of the skin, or because she is scratching/pawing at her eye causing hair to fall out. She should definitely be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible, because eye conditions can quickly turn into emergencies! The itching in the area can be caused by dry eye, which can cause an ulcer in the cornea, conjunctivitis, or eye pain for an number of conditions. To keep Bella comfortable until she is seen by a vet, you can get her an E-collar (or "cone") to prevent her from scratching/pawing/rubbing the area and causing further trauma. I hope Bella gets better soon!

It looks as if Bella has some mild conjunctivitis, or an inflammation of the soft tissues around the eye. This is usually caused by allergies or infection. Sometimes the swelling and inflammation is accompanied by discharge from the eye. For treatment, your vet may recommend a particular eye ointment that is antibacterial and has a steroid in it to help with the inflammation. Your vet may also want to check Bella’s eye to make sure there is not a scratch, or ulcer, on the eye. If allergies are the cause of the inflammation then an antihistamine like benedryl or Zyrtec may help. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Bella needs to see a vet immediately. It looks like she has a corneal ulcer. These are super duper painful, and the quicker they start treatment the quicker they heal without lasting effects (like a scar that can affect vision). Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC medications that will help. Since they often try to rub their eyes, you may need to have Bella wear an e-collar/cone until she is checked by the vet.
