Does my dog's flat and roundworm medicine also treat heartworms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Dr. Melanie! I'm so scared right now! I've found a prescription medicine against the flat and round worms...Do heartworm count too? I'm sure if I mentioned testing our pooch for heartworm I'd get nasty looks and called crazy by the parents. Thank you so very much for dealing with me !

Please don't be scared, there's no reason for it! No, this prescription medication for flat and roundworms will not treat heartworms, you need a medication specifically labeled for that like Heartgard. It's part of a dog's normal healthcare to prevent against heartworm if it is prevalent in your area, and you can give your vet a call to see if heartworm is a concern in your country. If it isn't, then there's not need to worry :-)
