My dog ate cayenne pepper and is reverse sneezing. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 20 days old | 36 lbs

This morning, I dropped some cayenne pepper on the floor and my dog got into a small amount of it. I noticed about 30 minutes later that his snout was swollen in a few spots. I gave him one and a half Benadryl 25 mg tablets. The swelling went down but now he has been reverse sneezing. It has happened about 6 times and is usually separated by 15 minutes. What do I need to do? He has never done this before.

Cayenne pepper is irritating to dogs, and it could be that Rico is reverse sneezing in response to sniffing some in his nose. I would monitor him for now, and if the swelling returns or the reverse sneezing continues, I would take him into the vet right away for treatment.
