My dog is limping. What's this bleeding red growth on his paw pad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Westie has, what appears to be, a blood blister however I am unsure as to what it is. I notcied a lot of dry blood in his bed and now seeing his paw pad, it explains his continuous limping. Please does anyone have any answers as to what it may be? It is bright red and I would explain it as missing his skin on his pad and no it isn't summer, it's winter. Thank you

There is a couple of types of skin growths in dogs that are basically tumors filed with blood. One is a hemangioma, and that type is benign (meaning it doesn't spread to the rest of the body); the other is a hemangiosarcoma, and these are malignant. There is no way to tell the difference between the two; the mass must be removed surgically and then tested with a biopsy. The other possibility is that your dog sustained some type of trauma to the foot that is causing the lesion and the bleeding. I would get this checked out right away, especially because of the possibility that it could be cancerous, so that you can get it removed and deal with it once and for all.
