Does my dog's flea/tick/worm medicine prevent heartworm? Symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 4 lbs

Doctor Melanie, we give her twice a month the same protection for ticks and fleas and worms (it has a picture of work on it) does it help? Also what are the symptoms of heartworm? We changed her food to the Royal Canine for crystals in urine and now it doesn't smell I think. I'll make sure to test her. Thanks once again for the information!

You are quite welcome for the help! Unfortunately, the flea, tick, and worm medication does not protect against heartworms, that requires a different medication. Signs of heartworm include a dry cough, lethargy, weight loss, anorexia, difficulty breathing, bulging chest, and collapse. Your vet can do a blood test to diagnose if she does have heartworm or not. Have a great day :-)
