Why are my old dog's back legs giving out and he stiffens in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

Mixed breed small male dog has his back legs not working. As i pick him up his heart starts racing, breathing rapidly and body stiffens. He is 10 yrs old (almost 11). He has liver problems, which he is has been treated and is ingesting hepatic dog food (ingesting because we have to force feed him as he has lack of appetite). Also has had an infection in his gallbladder and has been treated. Is there any possible cause or causes to the hind legs not working?

Lucas's back legs may not be working properly due to age related changes such as arthritis, or due to reduce nerve sensation to his hind legs, which can be caused by problems with his spine or brain. I would have Lucas seen by a vet for this. The vet can diagnose what is causing the problems with his hind limbs, and can discuss treatment options with you.
