My dog's wound is leaking pink fluid after surgery. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

My dog had a lipoma removed from her armpit with a penrose drain placed after a complicated surgery which to my knowledges nicked an artery which was then cauterised. This drain came out two days ago, but the wound seems to be leaking significantly more fluid today. This fluid is a pinkish brown tinged liquid. Is this anything to worry about? The wound doesn't seem to smell particularly and isn't overly hot, and her gums are pink. Thanks for any advice!

Some drainage after drain removal is often expected as the volume is increasing I recommend you get her rechecked at your vets office in the morning, it may be necessary to replace the drain until the wound has further healed. It is positive that the fluid is not foul smelling and pinkish-brown indicates no current, active bleeding so unless anything changes waiting for regular office hours would be appropriate

Any type of discharge from the surgery site is considered abnormal. I would recommend taking Rich back to your vet to have this looked at. The wound may be opening slightly or a mild infection at the site may be present. Sometimes in the beginning stages of an infection it doesn't have a really strong odor to it.
