Why does my dog gag and stick her tongue out at foil wrapper noises?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

Hi! Just a quick question. So Kaya has always seemed to hate the noise of foil wrappers and today had a gagging fit that only lasted a few seconds when i opened one today, and as soon as i stopped, she was okay. Its the strangest thing and im not sure what it means? She always does it whenever i crinkle a foil wrapper, and she'll either stick her toung out or gag at the noise. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

I wish I could help, however I have to say that this also sounds very strange to me! I've looked it up on a couple of veterinary resources and can't find anything there either. If you're sure it correlates with the sound of the wrappers, and it doesn't occur at any other times, it's probably harmless - I know this is probably obvious, but I guess I would do my best not to crinkle wrappers in her presence!
