Dog bladder tumor surgery: What if there's not enough bladder?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 6 lbs

We took her to the the vet and they told us that she has a bladder tumor possibly in her bladder wall so they are going to try to remove it . The thing is they said if they don't have enough of bladder to sew back together . They will have to put her to sleep . What are the possibilities of that happening ?

It really depends on the location of the tumor in the bladder. If the tumor is located near vital structures like the ureter or urethra than it will be extremely difficult to remove the tumor. You could take her to a veterinary specialist (oncologist and/or a surgeon) for a second opinion to determine the best way to treat. Radiation and/or chemotherapy may be help.

It depends on what type of cancer it is. Aggressive tumors or incompletely removed tumors can recur or spread to another area of the body. Each type of cancer tends to go to certain places and have characteristics on how long it takes to spread as some are faster than others. Knowing what type of cancer can better answer your question. If she is unable to urinate, then I would get her seen to make sure she doesn't cause kidney problems from this
