My cat has severe anxiety. What are the best treatment options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 8 lbs

Hello, Ever since my cat was born, she's turning 4 this April, she's had severe anxiety. She hides in underneath furniture and chooses to be in a separate room verses with my family. She's a sweet cat, but is too anxious around people and loud noises. She runs and flinches at people walking towards her and she's never been mistreated a day in her life. I'm asking to see if you would suggest putting her on medicine to treat her anxiety? I called my local vet but they don't offer anxiety meds.

You can speak to another vet about anti-anxiety medications for Prim, but I can recommend a few things you can do at home for her. First, I suggest trying Feliway. It's a plug in diffuser that spreads pheromones around the room, which helps with anxious cats. You can also use a Sentry calming collar on her, which will also release pheromones when in contact with her skin. Certainly get a second opinion about medications for her as well.
