My dog knows when I'm upset and tries to comfort me. Is this common?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 4 lbs

My little precious ball of fur is my life saviour and I wouldn't know where to go without her. As a person who's been through hell and back and who is still fighting the battle within oneself. Bella has been a huge support for me ,she knows when something is upsetting me and she'd watch over me and follow me around and when she sees the opportunity she'd gently pull my jeggins and bark until I pick her up and then she'd shower me with kisses and protect me.Can you explain? Is it usual?Thank you

I'm so sorry that your life has been so rough, and I'm glad that you Bella to help you through it! Dogs are very sensitive to their owners moods, and she's clearly picking up that when you are upset, you need love and attention to feel better. That is why she wants you to pick her up, so she can show you that she loves you. It is a normal thing, dogs can be very attuned to their owners. I had a dog who has since passed away, but when I went through a rough time in my life about five years back, she never left my side. I spent many hours with her head in my lap as she comforted me. You are very lucky to have such a wonderful girl like Bella!
