Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

Poor Lily! This could be a sign of kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs. I would have her seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can confirm if she does have kennel cough at the exam. While it's a self limiting disease, medications can help reduce the severity of the symptoms, and the vet can prescribe medications for her.

Coughing white foam does not lead to heart disease, it does not cause it at all. The dog is coughing due to congestion in the lungs, so there will already be some fluid accumulation causing the coughing. The cough is a symptom of the fluid accumulation, not a cause of it.

Yes, significant irritation the the trachea and will cause them to cough up phlegm. Dogs will cough for many reasons including infections and allergies. If this is happening beyond 48 hours, I recommend to have Ozzy examined by the veterinarian for treatment which will help him to get better much faster. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
