My cat is eating less food. Is it the summer heat or a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi I have a 1 year old British shorthair male and its currently summer in australia. He doesnt seem to be eating as much as he used to and sometimes only eats half of a recommended daily serving of food. I am stuck to why this is the case as ive tried several different types or foods. He seems to eat treats and food by hand.

I'm sorry your kitty isn't eating as much right now. It could be because it's so hot in Australia that his appetite has decreased, or it could be that he has a dental problem or illness causing his decrease in appetite. It's always best to have a health check done by a vet when a cat stops eating as much, and I would have him seen by a vet either today or tomorrow. If there is a medical cause behind his lack of eating, the vet can treat him for it.

If it's really hot, Puffin may not feel like eating in the heat. It could also be that he has a medical problem causing his decrease in appetite such as dental issues. To be safe, I would take him into the vet on Monday for a health check. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
