My dog breathing hard, not drinking after surgery. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | 9 years and 1 month old | 140 lbs

My 9 year old dog had surgery today to remove a cancerous mass on his neck. I also found out that he has a torn ACL. He is breathing very deeply/hard and won't drink water. He's not panting. When should I be worried?

Poor Baxter! The breathing deeply and hard can be a sign of pain, and I am concerned that he won't drink water. While it's normal for a dog to not have much of an appetite after surgery, he should at least be drinking some water. I would give your vet a call know to let them know you are seeing these signs in Baxter. They can tell you if they want to see him.
