Dog straining, bloody urine. Is it a UTI or emergency vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 30 lbs

Hello! My female Australian Shephard collie mix has been needing to go outside all morning, every time she tries to urinate, nothing happens. On one of these occasions I noticed a bloody tint to a bit of urine. By google search, I see that it's almost obvious she has a bladder infection. We are currently out of town and don't have a vet here, I was wondering if this is something we need to see an emergency vet for, or if there is something natural we can do for her? Thank you for your help!

Yes, I would definitely take Kahlua into an ER vet. I would be very concern that if she is trying to urinate and nothing is happening that she may have bladder stones. Those can cause a blockage in the urethra, which is fatal without treatment. It could also be a UTI, but as I said, it's quite concerning that she is trying to urinate with nothing coming out. Please take her into a vet right away.
