The amount of protein in a dog's diet should be between 18-25% daily. In terms of the correct amount of food, I would feed an adult formulated dog food and give your dog the daily allotment recommended on the bag. Divide it into two equal portions to feed your dog twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening.

What is the protein requirement for senior dogs 7+?
According to the National Research Council (NRC) on Nutrient Requirements for Dogs and Cats, the daily protein requirement for an adult dog is 23 g of crude protein. This can be confusing because most pet food labels list protein as a % basis. You can calculate whether your dog is receiving at least 23 g of crude protein per day based on how much food you feed him. The NRC does not list a protein requirement specifically for senior dogs, so you can feed the amount recommended for adult dogs. However, senior dogs do require fewer calories overall. What would be considered lightly to moderately active? I walk my dog 4-5 days per week for about 45-50 minutes. She's on a food that has 20% protein. Should I change foods to one that has 25-26% protein?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would consider that level of activity moderate though very appropriate. You do not need to increase the amount of protein you feed her. She is already eating a proper amount of protein. Good luck!

How much protein is the right amount for dogs? Some dog foods have 30% plus others much less.
30% is excessive and there is no added benefit to that level. If she is a high energy dog then a higher fat content is better to maintain weight if that is an issue. 20-25% is most commonly found in adult maintenance foods.

Hello, Chloe's diet has the average protein content for a maintenance food. She does not need any more protein and will not become protein deficient on that percentage of protein. Majority of the protein in food is either used for energy, stored in the amino acid pool, or converted to fat. Since Chloe is not a working dog, she does not need excessive protein to replenish her amino acid pool. Any excess amino acids will again, be converted to energy or stored as fat. Hope this helps

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. When we calculate the daily caloric requirements for dogs, we use a calculation called RER, or resting energy requirement. For a 75 lb dog, this value is 985 kcal/day. Since he is young and active, we multiply this amount by a factor to account for this. In his case, his total calories that he should ingest per day is between 1200-1300. This should help him maintain the weight he is currently at. Should my dog have 20% protein, 10% fat, 25% protein, 13% fat or 30% protein, 17% fat? She's currently on Natural Balance L.I.D. Formulas which is 20% protein, 10% fat but I'm wondering if this is enough for her? I will say with the natural balance
The recommended level for an adult, spayed dog is about 18% protein and 9-15% fat. If she is active as in a working dog, doing agility trials several times per week, or other high-intensity activities, then a higher fat/protein combination is needed as the body uses up more energy and the muscles need to be continually supplied with protein. However, for a typical house pet with regular exercise, sticking to the recommended amount is best. Overfeeding leads to excess calories which turn into fat and weight gain and are not used.

I'm debating between picking a dog food with 20% protein or 25% protein. Since dogs are considered carnivores by some would 25% protein be better for her?
The actual laboratory level of protein is of limited value in picking a food as it must be weighed against the quality of the protein (how much will be digested /absorbed and how much will be processed as 'waste' by the liver and kidneys and how much will be excreted directly) as well as her lifestyle and any health or weight issues she may have. With any new food it is important to introduce gradually and monitor for any signs of upset stomach, weight gain or weight loss which might indicate a change in the diet or amount fed would be required.

I make my own pet food and want to make sure I'm giving my dog enough protein, while also not breaking the budget. I generally give about a cup and a half of whatever meat I'm using (ground beef, turkey or chicken), and a cup of both veggies and rice
In my experience, home diets are very hard to do because it's very difficult to get the correct balance of nutrients a dog needs to stay healthy. That's why I never recommend them.
