My old dog has a red, cloudy eye but no pain. Could it be glaucoma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I came home tonight, and my boyfriend noticed my dog's right eye is almost completely clouded over in red. He doesn't seem to be in pain--not pawing at his eye, not wimpering, he's still letting us pet his face/head, acting happily, etc. He's 15 and has cataracts that have been worsening; my last vet said the only treatment would be surgery to remove which I couldn't afford and not sure it's necessary given his age. I'm afraid it's glaucoma though given the redness, should I bring him in?

Based on your description I would be more worried about hemorrhage in the eye than glaucoma but either way I'd recommend having your dog seen by a veterinarian. Glaucoma usually causes redness on the white part of the eye while the rest of the eye looks cloudy or blue. Bleeding in the eye can be a sign of high blood pressure, trauma or a bleeding disorder and could lead to glaucoma if not treated promptly.
