Why are my dog's anal bumps oozing after vet visit for anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 30 lbs

My dog went to the vet for the open wound on his neck. Vet wasn't sure what it started as (ingrown hair? Cyst?) but said it was infected & he was given antibiotic. We also had noticed bumps around his tail and anus and he was scooting a lot prior to the vet visit. They released his anal glands & said the bumps there may be a direct result of them needing to be released. He was prescribed a spray for those bumps. Today the bumps look to oozing puss when they weren't prior to vet. is this normal ?

If the bumps are oozing a purulent discharge than that is not normal, especially if he is already taking an oral antibiotic for the wound on his neck. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Depending on when the antibiotics were started, your vet may want to change antibiotics or culture the discharge to see what antibiotic is best. If the bumps do not resolve with antibiotics than they should be biopsied to get an exact diagnosis.

I'm not sure what these bumps are exactly but if they are indeed connected to the anal gland problem there is a fair chance that it is an infection, maybe the anal glands are infected too. at the moment he is on antibiotics, give it at least a week to see if it makes any difference to those bumps, if it doesn't take him back to the vet as he may need a different type of antibiotic for that.
