My rabbit is sick, lying unresponsive in his litter box. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

my rabbit appears to be unwell. I found him lying in his litter tray a couple of hours ago, (he usually never lays in here). He had his eyes open but was unresponsive until I moved the tray. I gave him some fresh air and a cold washer on his ears but he hasn't moved much and once back in his cage has returned to his litter tray. He is now laying in there with the washer and the fan. Usually at this time he is up and eating and running around, but he is just still in his tray. What should I do?

There is definitely something wrong with him, in most cases when a rabbit shows such symptoms quite suddenly it is because of gut stasis, but it could also be other things. you must take him to the vet ASAP, he will need a checkup and a simple blood test to check for stasis/blockage then he can get the proper treatment.
